It is a profound honor to present on a novel color It is a profound honor to present on a novel color variant of Phalaenopsis amabilis at the World Orchid Conference in Dresden this 27 March 2026. Complementing our talk, I have prepared printed postcards featuring exquisite hand-drawn illustrations by @deborahlambkin, Royal Horticultural Society Orchid Artist. This milestone marks 273 years since Carl Linnaeus first described Phalaenopsis amabilis in 1753, spotlighting its striking red-lipped form, P. amabilis f. elysia. [IPNI link: https://ipni.org/n/77353825-1] “Elysia” nods to the Elysian Fields of Greek myth—a hero’s paradise earned through transformation’s stages: • Nigredo (dark breakdown): Facing chaos and ego death in shadows.
• Albedo (purification): Washing away impurities for clear insight.
• Citrinitas (awakening): Golden energy bridging to wholeness.
• Rubedo (completion): Passionate union into eternal perfection. This mirrors the orchid’s bloom in Mount Slamet’s shadowy forest: • Nigredo hides in the dim understory—clinging to bark amid moss and decay, like a hero’s trial in primal chaos.
• Albedo emerges in pristine white tepals, glowing with lunar purity as light pierces the canopy.
• Citrinitas shines in the labellum’s yellow-golden sidelobe, like dawn’s fire preparing the bloom’s union.
• Rubedo triumphs in the vivid red midlobe—blood-red passion crowning white purity into a heroic, paradisiacal flower. From forest shadow to floral gold, Phal. amabilis f. elysia embodies the timeless quest for wholeness, as if the alchemist’s stone itself had bloomed eternal from humble root.
